KUCHING, Oct 13: The Sarawak government, through the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA), has approved 143 hectares of land in Meradong for hybrid paddy cultivation through a 20-year collaboration with Onemas Agriculture Sdn Bhd.

According to a TVS news report, Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, stated that this initiative represents a strategic step toward boosting local rice production and strengthening Sarawak’s food security as initial trials indicate hybrid paddy has the potential to yield up to 11.08 metric tonnes per hectare.

This is compared to approximately 1.5 metric tonnes per hectare using traditional planting methods.
