DUNGUN: A 25-year-old medical assistant drowned while swimming at Chemerong Waterfall here today.
Al-Muktafi Billah Shah Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Senior Fire Officer I Kama Suhaimi Abdullah said the victim, Mohd Ikmal Awid, who was stationed at Kemaman Hospital, was found at the scene at noon.
He said the department received a report on the incident at 11.46am, but firefighters who arrived at the scene found that the victim, from Kota Belud, Sabah, had already been located by his friends.
"The victim was said to be swimming with six of his friends when suddenly he and another friend were swept away by strong currents," he said in a statement.
Suhaimi said the victim's friend was rescued by their friends, but the victim could not be saved.
