tl;dr: You can now run many BeOS versions in the browser at Infinite Mac, my site where you can experience the Macintosh Cinematic Universe from 1984 to 2005. The installs are full peers to their Mac cousins: you can boot them instantly (large disks are streamed in), play around with pre-installed software from Infinite HD, insert CD-ROMs from the Internet Archive, and save your work on the “Saved HD” drive.
BeOS was a multimedia-focused, multi-tasking and multi-threaded OS that was eventually ported to the Power Macintoshes of the mid-90s. It impressed many in the Mac community, including Apple itself, who considered acquiring Be, the company that had created it. If you’ve been following the saga of Apple’s search for a next-generation operating system, this lets you see what the road not taken was like.
