THERE is an uncomfortable truth about the workplace that many people do not like to hear: everyone can be replaced.

It does not matter how long you have been with an organisation, how important your position is, or how many people depend on you.

Sooner or later, circumstances change. People leave, organisations restructure, technology advances, responsibilities shift and new talent arrives.

This is not necessarily a pessimistic view of work. In many ways, it is a healthy one.

Too often, people confuse being valuable with being indispensable. They are not the same thing.
