KOTA KINABALU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) will protect undocumented and stateless communities from exploitation amid cross-border threats.

Its commander, Datuk Victor Sanjos, said the lack of valid identification, limited access to formal employment, socioeconomic factors and the location of some communities could create conditions that might be exploited by irresponsible parties.

"Women and children are among those requiring protection," he told the New Straits Times.

Victor said Esscom also took into account threats including cross-border crime, syndicate activities and exploitation.

Measures would include verifying individuals' identities to distinguish between victims of exploitation, individuals requiring protection and suspects of criminal offences, he said.
