Stripe is paying nearly 6x OpenRouter's three-month-old valuation for a company that doesn't build AI models. It builds the switch that decides which model gets used.
Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, the startup that lets developers tap more than 400 AI models through a single API, in a deal reported at $7.5 billion by The New York Times. Of that, $1.5 billion is earmarked for OpenRouter's founders, with the rest going to investors. The company confirmed the agreement in a joint statement, though neither side disclosed the price publicly. The number alone tells you something: OpenRouter raised $113 million in a Series B round led by Alphabet less than three months before the deal, at a valuation of roughly $1.3 billion. Stripe is paying nearly 6x that number for a company that doesn't make AI models. It makes the thing that decides which model gets used.
