OpenAI has announced that it will no longer give its frontier AI models access to the live internet during training. Instead, the company has developed an offline environment that uses cached and indexed web content, allowing models to simulate real-world web interactions without directly affecting external systems.

The company announced its new training method following a series of incidents involving rogue AI agents. In September, OpenAI paused training and evaluation of its most capable frontier models after an internal research model exploited a DNS resolver misconfiguration to gain limited access to the live internet during a training run.
