KOTA BARU: Tougher penalties, including imprisonment, for "Mat Rempit" activities are expected to come into force from Nov 1 following amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333).

Road Transport Department (RTD) senior enforcement director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the amendments had been approved by Parliament and were now awaiting gazetting.

He said the amendments would allow enforcement officers to take firmer action against those involved in illegal racing and dangerous riding.

"The amendments to Act 333 have been approved by Parliament and if all goes well, it will be enforced from Nov 1.

"We will impose much heavier penalties, including imprisonment, for Mat Rempit offences.
