PUTRAJAYA: The Plantation and Commodities Ministry will study a proposal to strengthen cooperation with Indonesia to prevent and control forest and land fires, including through the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC).
The ministry said the cooperation could include information sharing and efforts to prevent and control fires in Kalimantan, following reports linking Malaysian plantation companies to forest and land fires in Indonesia.
It viewed reports by Greenpeace and Pantau Gambut on the matter seriously, including concerns over the impact on public health and the environment.
"Through the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), the ministry held an engagement session with six Malaysian companies on Sept 10 to obtain information on the fire situation and the preventive and control measures in place in their respective operating areas," it said in a statement.
