KUALA LUMPUR: The government's move to offer permanent positions to more than 9,000 contract doctors under the 2027 Budget has prompted calls for similar clarity on the future of contract pharmacists, who continue to face employment uncertainty.

The Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS) said contract pharmacists should not be overlooked in efforts to address longstanding job insecurity in the public healthcare sector.

Its president, Professor Amrahi Buang, welcomed the government's announcement but said pharmacists who had served for years in public hospitals, health clinics and other Health Ministry facilities also deserved a clear pathway to permanent employment.

"Pharmacists who have committed years of service to the public healthcare system deserve a transparent, fair and sustainable pathway towards long-term employment.
