France has been rocked by growing anger over the rising cost of living and the state of the country's high schools.

Nationwide protests on Oct 17 erupted into violent clashes with police on the sidelines, as well as large-scale looting and vandalism in cities including Marseille.

The interior minister later admitted authorities had "lost control", and the government stepped up security for similar protests a week later, though some violent clashes also broke out then.
