KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian creators must understand that copyright protects original work expressed in material form, not ideas alone, an intellectual property lawyer said.

Speaking on Beyond the Headlines in conjunction with World Animation Day, Mahendra Balakrishnan said original work must be expressed in a tangible form, such as a drawing, script, photograph or film, to qualify for copyright protection.

He advised creators to keep records of their work, store files securely and limit the sharing of concepts and designs before taking steps to protect them.

He also urged creators to understand their contractual rights, particularly the distinction between licensing and assigning copyright, before allowing others to use their work.
