KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 — The number of private hospital beds has officially overtaken the number of public hospital beds in Penang, revealed state executive councillor Daniel Gooi Zi Sen.

At a Sihat Beyond The Clinic (SBTC) podcast aired last October 21, the Penang state exco for youth, sports and health pointed out that although medical professionals emigrate overseas, the “majority” still remain in Malaysia in the private sector after resigning from public service.

“I like to pick this example, where if you walk into Sunway Medical Centre Penang, you see doctors formerly with Hospital Seberang Jaya,” said Gooi. The former is a private hospital, whereas the latter is a government hospital under the Ministry of Health (MOH).
