The US Treasury sanctions a “vast criminal network” run by two Indian nationals accused of helping Iran’s shadow fleet sail under false flags with fake certificates.
WASHINGTON: The United States on Wednesday issued sanctions targeting what it described as a “vast criminal network” run by two Indian nationals that was aiding Iran’s shadow fleet of oil tankers in committing maritime fraud.
In a statement, the US Treasury said the network aided Iranian vessels in sailing under false flags and in gaining fake maritime certifications.
The move was the latest in a tightening web of US sanctions targeting Iran since August, when Washington announced that it would be seeking the “economic asphyxiation” of the country in conjunction with its military campaign.
