KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed National Harmony Commission will not be established.
National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang said the decision was made after two engagement sessions with civil society organisations, government agencies, academics, community leaders and various stakeholders.
He said the sessions assessed the need, scope, implications, challenges and feasibility of establishing the National Harmony Commission.
"After considering the views of all parties and conducting further review, the ministry has decided not to proceed with establishing the National Harmony Commission as a new entity," he said.
He said the ministry would instead focus on strengthening existing institutions, namely the Department of National Unity and Integration, Rukun Tetangga communities and Community Mediators, as the lead mechanisms for managing social harmony.
