KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia had 40.77 million registered vehicles as at Sept 30, with 26.6 million, or 65.3 per cent, active, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said.

He said 1.62 million new vehicles were registered in 2025, comprising about 847,000 cars and 703,000 motorcycles.

"Of the active vehicles, nearly 16 million are cars and 9.57 million are motorcycles," he said in a written parliamentary reply.

Loke said the increase in private vehicles had contributed to traffic congestion, longer travel times and greater exposure to accident risks, affecting productivity and public wellbeing.

"Continued reliance on private vehicles also increases travel costs and air pollution, while placing greater pressure on road infrastructure," he said.
