KUCHING, Oct 7: Sarawak needs more five-star and boutique hotels as the State expands its international events calendar and seeks to boost tourism receipts rather than focus solely on visitor numbers.
Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the demand for quality accommodation would become increasingly important as Sarawak hosts larger international gatherings, including a proposed major sporting event involving 57 countries in 2029.
“If the president, head of state, prime minister or other dignitaries were to come over for the opening ceremony, where are you going to place them? Surely, we can’t put them in a three-star hotel,” he said after officiating the Sarawak Women of Tomorrow (SWOT) 2026, Season 5 at Damai Lagoon Resort, Santubong, today.
