PETALING JAYA: The road transport department (JPJ) says it has detected parties offering foreigners unrecognised five-year international driving permits (IDPs) for up to RM500 each.

Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Hamidi Adam said the documents did not meet the requirements for recognition as valid permits to drive legally in Malaysia.

“IDPs issued by JPJ are valid for one year, in accordance with the 1949 Convention on Road Traffic.

“A document bearing the words ‘International Driving Permit’ does not automatically grant a person the right to drive in Malaysia. The document must be issued by an authority and meet Malaysia’s recognition requirements,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
