OCTOBER 13 — Budget 2027, tabled on October 9, sets out substantial financial commitments to Malaysia’s economic and social priorities.

The Finance Ministry’s Fiscal Outlook estimates federal expenditure at RM459.8 billion, excluding the contingency reserve. Yet the budget’s value will depend on how that money becomes accessible services and better living conditions.

The headline allocation begins the assessment; it cannot settle whether policy will work.

The proposed RM16 billion for Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) is intended to ease pressure on household finances. Development expenditure is projected at RM83 billion, while the fiscal deficit is projected at 3.3 per cent of gross domestic product in 2027. Policymakers are attempting to balance social protection and development with fiscal discipline, amid competing demands on public funds.
