KUCHING, Oct 14: Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon has urged the Sarawak government to expedite the establishment of a special committee with a clear mandate to address longstanding development issues affecting the Bakun Resettlement Scheme, including customary land rights in communities surrounding the Bakun Hydroelectric Dam.

He said the proposed committee should involve the relevant ministries, government agencies and community representatives to examine outstanding issues and formulate fair, comprehensive and lasting solutions.

“The issues affecting the Bakun Resettlement Scheme (BRS) in Sungai Asap and the customary land rights of communities around the dam remained unresolved and required a coordinated approach,” he said while debating the Sarawak Budget 2027 at the State Legislative Assembly (DUNS) sitting today.
