Malaysia is projected to become an aged nation by 2048, when people aged 65 and above are expected to make up 14% of the population. (Magnific pic)PETALING JAYA: Universities should expand short-term elderly care courses to produce more trained caregivers ahead of Malaysia becoming an aged nation in 2048, says the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
Its CEO, Shatar Sabran, said quality-verified courses could help people care for their parents while creating opportunities for participants to offer part-time caregiving services.
“I have told the universities to offer short-term courses in elderly care, and these courses must undergo quality verification,” he told FMT.
Shatar said participants who had completed the courses and obtained certificates could be entrusted with caring for the elderly who needed such services.
