PETALING JAYA: Budget 2027 should shift industrial policy towards revitalising Malaysia’s "forgotten cities" rather than creating new economic centres from scratch, a policy think tank says.

Research for Social Advancement (Refsa) said pouring funds into greenfield mega-projects risked leaving behind established secondary towns that already possess productive infrastructure, skilled workers and local supply chains.

In a policy brief, the think tank said the Pre-Budget Statement 2027 recognised that resources for social development should be based on actual needs, and argued that the same approach should be applied to the economy.
