PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today upheld the conviction and RM10,000 fine imposed on activist Wong Yan Ke for insulting the then Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor and convocation attendees during a protest in 2019.
A three-member bench chaired by Justice Noorin Badaruddin dismissed Wong’s appeal against his conviction and sentence under Section 504 of the Penal Code, which criminalises intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of the peace.
The court found that the charge was valid, the prosecution proved all elements of the offence beyond reasonable doubt, and there was no miscarriage of justice.
