PASIR MAS: A total of 609 locations across Kelantan have been identified as flood-prone ahead of the Northeast Monsoon, which is expected to begin tomorrow.
Kelantan Drainage and Irrigation Department director Datuk Dr Siti Fairus Zakaria said Pasir Mas recorded the highest number of potentially affected locations at 200, followed by Machang (75), Kuala Krai and Kota Baru (64 each), Pasir Puteh (49), Tumpat (47), Gua Musang (45), Tanah Merah (24), Bachok (22) and Jeli (19).
She said flooding was caused not only by the proximity of settlements to rivers but also by inadequate drainage systems that could not cope with prolonged rainfall.
"One of the main causes of flooding in Kelantan, particularly during the Northeast Monsoon, is prolonged heavy rain, which causes river levels to rise and overflow into low-lying areas and riverside settlements.
