GEORGE TOWN: A coalition of Penang non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has called for an independent inquiry into the fatal Paya Terubong landslide, urging the state government to hold those responsible for hillside development accountable.

The groups called on the government to immediately establish a State Commission of Inquiry (SCI) into the landslide at Taman Seri Rambai last Sunday, which claimed the life of a 73-year-old doctor.

Its spokesperson, Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) president Meenakshi Raman, said the inquiry must establish the cause of the tragedy, scrutinise approvals granted by the relevant authorities, identify possible negligence and determine who should be held responsible.
