The EC said it was informed of the seat vacancy, following the resignation of Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung, by Speaker Johari Abdul in a letter dated Oct 2.

PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission will not hold a by-election for the Petaling Jaya parliamentary seat following the resignation of its MP, Lee Chean Chung.

EC chairman Ramlan Harun said the commission was informed of the seat vacancy by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul through a letter dated Oct 2.

Johari informed the EC that based on Article 54(1) of the constitution, there was no need to fill the vacant seat since the parliamentary term ends in less than two years, he said in a statement.

The 15th Parliament's term automatically ends in December 2027, after which the 16th general election must be held within 60 days.
