ABU DHABI, Nov 2 — UAE state oil company ADNOC today announced a partnership with OpenAI, saying it would be the world’s first energy firm to deploy OpenAI Frontier, an advanced artificial intelligence platform.

The deal was announced as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman attended the UAE’s flagship oil industry event in Abu Dhabi, which has bet heavily on the technology in a bid to diversify its economy away from energy.

Gulf countries have been struggling to export oil since Iran began blockading the Strait of Hormuz and targeting tankers in the area, but the US military has been escorting ships through the route.

ADNOC said in a statement that OpenAI’s models will enable it to to be “the first energy company in the world to use this technology to value every barrel while it is still in the ground”.
