KUALA LUMPUR: A 66-year-old retiree lost RM342,000 after falling victim to a bogus online casino investment scheme promoted through WhatsApp.

Ampang Jaya police chief assistant commissioner Khairul Anuar Khalid said the victim, a woman who previously worked in the private sector, was contacted by an individual through WhatsApp in August this year.

"Someone from the scheme initially sought financial assistance from the victim, claiming to have suffered losses in a casino cybersecurity company in Singapore.

"The individual then introduced an investment opportunity involving a casino business, promising lucrative returns," he said in a statement.
