STRASBOURG: The European Commission on Tuesday proposed limiting Ukraine's access to farm subsidies if it joins the EU and tightening "safeguards" on all newcomers, as Brussels grapples with how to keep the bloc workable should it expand.
Russia's 2022 invasion of its neighbour breathed fresh impetus into efforts to expand the EU as Ukraine and Moldova joined the queue of countries seeking membership.
The ex-Soviet duo are now among four frontrunners, with Montenegro pressing to become the EU's 28th member next year and Albania not too far behind.
