KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 — Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has welcomed the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) move to reserve 30 per cent of specialisation slots for doctors serving in Sabah and Sarawak.

The DAP lawmaker said the proposed solution addressed one of the main concerns of medical officers that East Malaysia postings would limit their chances of becoming specialists.

“I urge the ministry to go beyond the 30 per cent quota, where all doctors posted to Sabah and Sarawak should be given priority or added weightage in their application for Master’s and specialisation programmes in our local universities, not merely tied to that 30 per cent quota,” Dr Yii said in a statement today.

“Of course, there can be reasonable exceptions, for example where there are not enough candidates from Sabah and Sarawak in certain disciplines, or where there is an urgent national need for specialists in fields such as cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery.
