KUALA LUMPUR: The families of 54 Malaysians still missing following floods in Nepal, are seeking clarification from the government on their loved ones' legal status as Nepal's proposed 45-day period approaches tomorrow.

The Malaysia Solidarity Families in Hope (MASFIH) said the families needed clear and consistent information on the legal provisions applicable to those still missing, particularly as previous information given to them cited a three-year period, while recent reports on Nepal's laws referred to 12 years.

MASFIH coordinator and spokesman Dr Manivannan Rethinam said the group welcomed Nepal's reported proposal to reduce the period for determining the legal status of people missing in disasters from 12 years to 45 days.
