SAN DIEGO: The USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier whose lengthy deployment in the Gulf in support of President Donald Trump's war on Iran sparked fears for the welfare of its huge crew, arrived back at its home port on Thursday.

Families of servicemen and women lined the quayside in San Diego, California, to welcome home loved ones they had not seen for almost a year.

Alba Solano told AFP she and her daughter were "nervous" and "very excited" at the prospect of seeing her partner, with whom she had struggled to communicate during the mission.

"We heard from him through e-mails... we were able to text here and there. Phone calls were terrible. It never worked. He could hear us, but we couldn't hear him," she said.
