IPOH: The Cell Broadcast System, a national disaster warning system announced last year, is in its final phase of development, with live testing scheduled for Nov 19.

Developed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the system will send disaster alerts directly to mobile phones in affected areas without requiring recipients' phone numbers, SMS services or an internet connection.

It is intended to complement and eventually replace the existing SMS-based disaster warning system, providing faster, more targeted alerts to people in areas at risk.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said timely warnings could give people precious minutes to evacuate and seek shelter before tragedy struck.
