(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Malaysian households spent more on eating out than on food consumed at home in 2024, averaging RM902.70 a month on meals outside compared with RM875.80 on food at home, Khazanah Research Institute says.

KRI's The State of Households 2026 said the trend came amid growing concerns over the nation’s health, with more than half of Malaysian adults classified as overweight or obese in 2023.

Household spending on eating out increased across all income groups between 2019 and 2024, it said, but the rise was more pronounced among the bottom 80% of households, whose average expenditure grew nearly 1.5 times over the five-year period.
