The dwarf reed snake can cartwheel its way out of danger at speeds four times faster than it can slither, thanks to an extraordinary escape technique that fascinates scientists. (Wikipedia pic)PETALING JAYA: When danger approaches, most snakes rely on their ability to slither swiftly into hiding. But a remarkable group of small reptiles found in Malaysia has developed an escape technique that would put any accomplished gymnast to shame.

Rather than gliding across the ground, dwarf reed snakes can curl their bodies into a wheel-like shape and propel themselves forward in a succession of rapid cartwheels.

Now, an international team of scientists studying these elusive creatures in Borneo has discovered how they accomplish this extraordinary manoeuvre, reaching speeds of more than 13km/h while keeping their heads remarkably steady.
