PETALING JAYA: The president of a Rohingya association was charged in the Putrajaya magistrates' court today with two offences under the Societies Act.
Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani, who heads the Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organisation Malaysia (Merhrom), claimed trial to both charges under Sections 42 and 48 of the Act.
Section 42 deals with managing an unregistered society, while Section 48 deals with representing an unlawful society.
According to the Registrar of Societies, the charges against Zafar followed an investigation into Merhrom’s activities and statements, during which he allegedly introduced himself as the organisation’s president.
