KUALA LUMPUR: Defending champion Miyu Yamashita faces a strong challenge from major winner Ryu Hae Ran as the world's top golfers converge on Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) for the Maybank Championship, which begins today.

The 78-player, no-cut tournament offers a US$3 million (RM12.3 million) purse and crucial Race to the CME Globe points, with just four events remaining in the regular LPGA Tour season.

Players are also fighting for a spot in the top 60 of the season-long standings for the tour's season finale.

Yamashita, ranked fourth in the Rolex Rankings, won the tournament on her debut last year before being named the 2025 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year.
