KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Government has begun preliminary discussions with the Election Commission (EC) on increasing the number of Dewan Rakyat seats for Sabah and Sarawak.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Sabah and Sarawak) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said he had also proposed setting up a special committee under the technical committee to work out the mechanism for implementing the proposed increase.
"I have held preliminary discussions with the EC to obtain various inputs and determine what steps need to be taken next.
"I have also proposed setting up a special committee under the technical committee to work out the implementation mechanism in detail.
"I have suggested that it could perhaps be jointly chaired by the Law Minister and myself. However, these are only preliminary discussions," he told the Dewan Rakyat today.
