JOHOR BARU: Haze that reduced visibility at Senai International Airport to about 2,000 metres disrupted flight operations this morning, forcing aircraft to delay departures or divert.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said five flights scheduled to arrive at and depart from Senai were affected after visibility failed to meet safety requirements.
Several aircraft were diverted to Kuala Lumpur while one was sent to Changi Airport in Singapore. Flights yet to depart were held back.
Loke's own flight from Kuala Lumpur to Senai, scheduled for 6.45am, was delayed by one hour and 45 minutes after air traffic control advised that the aircraft could not land.
A source at Senai International Airport said that while the airport is equipped with an Instrument Landing System (ILS) to guide aircraft toward Runway 16 in poor weather, it does not allow landings in all visibility conditions.
