KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia wants to develop artificial intelligence (AI) talent and companies so it can become a developer of the technology rather than merely a user, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
He said strengthening capabilities was crucial to enable the country to develop new AI technologies capable of competing globally.
"We must become a country that develops AI. Moving forward, our focus now is on how we can develop the talent needed for this purpose.
"We also want to build companies that can develop or create new technologies and new AI at the global level. That is part of our plans," he said.
Gobind was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) in the Dewan Rakyat.
