KUALA LUMPUR: Travel Control Officers (TCO) are tasked with intelligence-related duties, including establishing contact with certain parties and conducting surveillance, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said.

Khalid, responding to questions about the role of TCOs following an incident involving Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, said the officers came under the Special Branch.

He said intelligence gathering could involve officers establishing contact with certain parties, conducting surveillance and carrying out other operational duties.

"Such activities are normal aspects of their work and should not be misinterpreted before investigators have established the full circumstances of the incident," he said after launching the Negotiators Guidelines Book at Bukit Aman today.
