KUALA LUMPUR: Installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras is a step in the right direction to enhance school safety, but it requires continuous monitoring to be truly effective.

Criminologist Kamal Affandi Hashim said the actual function and objectives of installing CCTVs must be carefully planned to ensure the system works as intended, rather than being treated as mere decoration or a compliance exercise.

He added that monitoring management and software compatible with these objectives must also be prioritised so recordings can be effectively monitored, analysed, and used.

"Without comprehensive planning, CCTV systems risk providing no real benefit despite being installed. Our main weakness lies in understanding the difference between prevention, intervention, and rehabilitation.
