GEORGE TOWN: Four fishing vessels using kenka nets, a type of fishing seine, were detained for breaching licence conditions during an enforcement operation in waters off southern Penang on Tuesday.
State Fisheries Department director Azimah Jumatli said the vessels were detained during Ops Periksa, conducted by the Batu Maung Fisheries Conservation and Protection Base, which inspected a total of 15 vessels.
“Among the violations detected were failure to operate the vessels personally as required under the licence conditions, the use of chains on the groundropes of fishing nets and weights exceeding the permitted limit,” she said in a statement today.
Azimah said the department would not tolerate any breaches of licence conditions by fishing vessels operating in Malaysian waters.
