KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Port Bhd is exploring a potential trade corridor linking Johor with Belawan in North Sumatra, as it seeks to strengthen cargo connectivity between Malaysia and Indonesia.
The port operator, a subsidiary of MMC Port Holdings Bhd, said it is working with PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 1 Belawan to assess opportunities for more efficient cargo movement, wider market access and stronger trade links between the two markets.
The potential Belawan-Johor connection was discussed during Johor Port's visit to Belawan Port in early September, held in conjunction with the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) 2026 programme in Medan.
Johor Port chief executive officer Md Derick Basir said the proposed corridor could bring businesses and markets in Northern Sumatra and Johor closer together.
