KUALA LUMPUR: The government's move to offer 9,000 permanent posts to contract doctors is a positive step towards addressing the country's doctor shortage.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the implementation of permanent appointments would take time, as the ministry needed to ensure candidates met the requirements and take into account the different batches and cohorts of medical officers.

"We will implement this innovatively so that it can be addressed as soon as possible.

"We will put an end to the interim contract system," he said on the sidelines of the 2027 Budget announcement today.
