KUALA LUMPUR: Victims of accidents caused by drunk or drug-impaired drivers should receive fair compensation without having to endure lengthy court proceedings, says Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
He welcomed the government's proposal to amend the Road Transport Act to make compensation mandatory for victims of accidents involving drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Lee said the proposal was justified as those responsible for causing accidents must be held accountable for the suffering and losses inflicted on their victims.
"We cannot allow these people to cause accidents and leave the victims to bear the consequences. Who is going to compensate them?" he said when contacted.
