OCTOBER 26 — The political fortunes of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, popularly known as Lula, have implications far beyond Brazil.

His continued leadership, through a victorious re-election, would offer Brazil another opportunity to deepen its engagement with Malaysia, Asean and the wider Global South. Brazil is after all a sectoral partner of Asean.

Brazil and Malaysia are geographically distant but strategically closer than conventional diplomacy might suggest. The forest in the Amazon and Borneo respectively needs fine stewardship.

Both are important emerging economies, members of the Global South, and countries that have consistently sought greater autonomy in a world dominated by competing major powers.
