Judicial Commissioner Syed Faisal Syed Amir, who presided over the High Court in Taiping, said the sentence should serve as a lesson to the public.PETALING JAYA: The High Court in Taiping has sentenced a man to 40 years in prison for murdering an alleged online gambling operator by setting fire to his shop six years ago.
Judicial Commissioner Syed Faisal Syed Amir meted out the maximum jail sentence on Muzammil Mohamad after finding him guilty of murdering Ng Wai Keong, then 26, on May 23, 2020, in Batu Kurau, about 20km from Taiping.
The court also handed down 12 strokes of the rotan to Muzammil, who is now 30.
"The sentence should serve as a lesson to the public," Syed Faisal said in his broad grounds of judgment yesterday.
