KUALA LUMPUR: A resilient spirit instilled in her from childhood helped Superintendent Nurhidayah Damanhoori prove that women can lead the police mounted unit, a role demanding physical endurance, specialised skills and discipline.

She made history in 2018 as the first woman appointed commanding officer of the unit since its establishment in 1984.

For Nurhidayah, who is the Internal Security and Public Order Department assistant director of development, technical and finance, the achievement came through life experiences, the courage to embrace new challenges and a willingness to learn.

She said her late father, Damanhoori Salikin, played a pivotal role in shaping her physical and mental resilience from an early age.
