KUALA LUMPUR: Consumer groups have called for clearer enforcement responsibilities and tighter monitoring of halal compliance at slaughterhouses following the seizure of more than 6.5 tonnes of raw chicken at a Puchong warehouse.
Consumers Association of Kedah (Cake) president Yusrizal Yusuf said overlapping responsibilities among enforcement agencies could create monitoring gaps, allowing violations to go undetected.
He proposed placing halal enforcement under the Islamic Development Department (Jakim), backed by a dedicated law granting the department clear enforcement powers.
"There are four or five laws involved, and everyone passes the responsibility on (to the other party). When something like this happens, who is going to inspect and who is going to take action?
